The Single Superphosphate (SSP) is a widely used phosphatic fertilizer produced by reacting phosphate rock with sulfuric acid, resulting in a product that contains water-soluble phosphorus (P₂O₅) and calcium sulfate (gypsum). It is one of the earliest and most affordable phosphorus fertilizers, crucial for improving soil fertility and crop productivity.

SSP plays a significant role in the agriculture sector, particularly for crops such as wheat, rice, maize, pulses, and oilseeds. Phosphorus is essential for root development, flowering, and energy transfer within plants, making SSP vital for healthy crop growth and higher yields. The addition of calcium in SSP also helps ameliorate acidic soils, improve soil structure, phosphate fertilizer, soil nutrient supplement, agricultural phosphorus source, plant growth enhancer, SSP fertilizer granules and support better nutrient absorption.

Its cost-effectiveness and easy availability make SSP a preferred choice for small and medium-scale farmers, especially in regions where complex or triple superphosphate fertilizers are less affordable. Additionally, it can be blended with other nutrients like nitrogen and potassium to create customized fertilizers suited to specific soil and crop requirements.

Market growth is driven by increasing global food demand, expanding agricultural activities, and government support for balanced fertilization practices. The adoption of SSP is particularly strong in Asia-Pacific, Africa, and Latin America, where phosphorus-deficient soils are common.

Challenges in the SSP market include variations in phosphate rock quality, transportation costs, and competition from more concentrated phosphorus fertilizers. Environmental concerns related to overuse and runoff causing water pollution are also prompting manufacturers to promote efficient usage and integrated nutrient management practices.

With the global push toward sustainable agriculture and improved soil health, Single Superphosphate remains a key fertilizer, supporting farmers in achieving higher crop productivity while maintaining soil fertility.
